A little before 1:00pm today, June 14th, the United States Senate voted to end cloture and confirm the nomination of Mari Carmen Aponte as United States Ambassador to El Salvador by a vote of 62 to 37..
This was the second vote on her confirmation, the first which failed in December. Through the efforts of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, the White House, members of the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda and Puerto Rican community leaders, this vote was successfully reversed today, which is a rare occurrence. This makes her the first Puerto Rican woman to serve as a US Ambassador.
LISTA and its Board of directors congratulate Ambassador Aponte and wish you the best on your appointment. Eres un orgullo latino gracias por representarnos.
