So T-Mobile is cutting jobs. This is exactly what we predicted would happen if its merger with AT&T was not approved, because a stand-alone T-Mobile lacks the financial strength to be a strong competitor as the industry transitions to 4G. For so many Latinos whose jobs in the wireless industry are important to our economy — everything from installation to network management — have been a great step into the broadband future and their own economic security. We share these employees’ anger at the way they have been treated by their company. We all know whose fault this was..

CNN has presented a well-known but hard truth: Wireless carriers need more spectrum if they are to meet customer demand, and without that, a crunch is inevitable. While there may be some short-term options and partial solutions for various carriers to explore, the real answer is open and competitive spectrum auctions, in which all carriers can compete fairly for this much-needed resource. Consumer demand for better service and faster speeds certainly won’t decrease, so underutilized spectrum should be auctioned off to those carriers that can quickly and effectively use it.
